Residential Treatment Program

Summary

residential treatment centerThis program is for children, ages 11 to 18, who are experiencing an emotional, mental or behavioral crisis, but are not considered an immediate danger to themselves or others. Like the Intensive Treatment Program, many of the children served in this program are in the state's custody while others are from families in our community. The boys and girls reside at Epworth and receive 24-hour structured supervision, therapy, recreational opportunities, medical care, and spiritual support. As soon as the children are able to stabilize their behaviors with the help of their treatment team, they are reunited with their families, through the Family Focus Program, integrated into a foster family, or enrolled in our Transitional Living Program.

Program Specifics

  • The Residential Treatment Center is located on 8.5 acres in Webster Groves and includes accommodations for 32 children age 11 to 18.
  • Children may be admitted to Epworth because of severe emotional problems, behavioral issues, mental health issues, parental conflict, parental neglect, physical and sexual abuse, and school failure.
  • Residents live in four dormitories in groups of seven to eight and are supervised 24 hours a day by highly trained youth advisors.
  • Epworth operates under a strength based therapeutic philosophy that builds on the strengths of each child and family. It's a practical approach that strengthens the capacity of each child to thrive in society.
  • Each child receives individual and group therapy by licensed therapists. Treatment includes family therapy whenever possible.
  • A consulting psychiatrist conducts medical reviews, psychiatric staffing, and works with the therapeutic staff to provide psychiatric support to each child.
  • Recreation therapy is offered daily. The recreation center includes a full-size gymnasium, outdoor swimming pool, weight room, art room, kitchen, music room, and general activity area.
  • Agency volunteers connect kids to the community through an active mentoring program.
  • Spiritual growth opportunities are also available.
