The Pillar of Strength Award Dinner, honoring Sue Engelhardt was held Friday, February 5, 2010 in the Khorassan Ballroom at the Chase Park Plaza A champion of children’s issues, Sue is particularly interested in furthering the educational prospects of those less fortunate. She was raised in a single parent home and knows firsthand how hard work and the generosity of others can create opportunities that would be otherwise elusive. Sue credits her many mentors with her success and feels that it is important to give back so others may receive the same benefits. Sue has contributed a significant amount of her time, energy and financial resources to building a strong, thriving community. She is indeed a Pillar of Strength and is an inspiration to us all. About Polo
Just as children at Epworth are learning to find strengths, polo players and their horses must constantly find the strength to succeed. Polo is an intensely physical endeavor, demanding the ultimate in skill, fitness and strength from all the participants, including the horses, who have to combine speed and stamina with controlled intensity and great agility. A polo match lasts about 90 minutes and is divided into six 7-minute periods, or Chukkers. Due to the heavy physical demands on the horses, a player will often come to the field with at least six horses and alternate mounts throughout the match.
Polo is possibly the oldest known team sport, with its origins traced back to nomadic Asiatic warriors over two thousand years ago. Known as "The Game of Kings" it was played from Constantinople to Japan by the middle ages. The earliest rules were written in the 1850's by British tea planters in India, and by 1869, the game was well established in England. In 1876, Polo enthusiast James Gordon Bennet brought the game to America. Today there are over 200 United States Polo Association clubs, with over 3,000 polo players.
Your family will love the opportunity to see a live polo match and enjoy the day at Billy & Christi Busch's Blue Heron Farms.
