Purpose: This position is responsible for identifying and meeting the everyday needs of a group of children, including housekeeping, food, shelter, security, and personal hygiene and health services. The work involves teaching daily living skills and socially accepted behavior to children, and providing structure, limits, guidance and consistency to the activities of residents in this Emergency Shelter program. The work also involves participation with group work and recreation activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties as assigned or needed.

Supervise residents in their daily living activities; observe and report on how they respond to each other and the other adults caring for them while being aware of youth’s whereabouts at all time.

Provide input, implement and manage the individual treatment program for the children; provides the opportunity for children to have varying degrees of control over their daily activities.

Provide instruction and guidance to youth in matters of interpersonal relations.

Complete after hours intake procedures and make housing determination for youth arriving at the shelter.

Monitor youth to ensure compliance with agency rules, cleanliness, personal habits and living, eating and sleeping arrangements.

Employ appropriate conflict resolution skills in dealing with groups and individuals.

Support treatment plans for individual youth.

Provide support and referral services on the agency Helpline.

Drive and/or accompany youth to other facilities or outings.

Ensure all documentation is completed before leaving each shift worked.

Dispense and record any necessary medications.

Prepare and/or serve meals as scheduled.

Ensure the general security, maintenance and cleanliness of the facility, equipment and supplies.

Education and/or Experience:
Graduation from high school or GED.

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, procedure manuals and treatment plans. Ability to write routine reports. Ability to effectively speak before groups of clients or employees of the agency.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee must be able to demonstrate proficiency with restraints. Be able to get down on knees, be able to move around on floor on hands and knees, be able to carry another person’s body weight to the floor – both someone of the same body size/weight and someone smaller, be able to use both arms and hands to grasp and hold another person’s body and be able to bend at waist and tilt pelvis up.

Work Environment: Emergency Shelter facility. May need to transport clients to activities or appointments.
